For English this week (Friday) you are asked to write a diary entry based on what you've read so far in The Guns of Easter. So, what I would like you to do is choose an event that has happened so far in the story and pretend that you are Jimmy writing about it. For example, we could use the part where he witnessed the GPO being taken over. Imagine, if you were Jimmy, what you might write in your diary that evening after that event.
Dear Diary,
I couldn't believe my eyes. I was used to seeing real British soldiers marching down the street, but not Irish ones like this, They didn't really have any real uniforms so they didn't look like a genuine army but they were marching like one. I actually think I recognised some of them from Uncle Mick's Citizen Army.
Next thing, one of them shouted "To the GPO" and before I knew what was happening they were running into the General Post Office and taking it over. It was all very strange!!! I was feeling a little bit scared but I wanted to keep looking- what was going on? Was it the start of some sort of a rebellion or something like that? I don't even know why they would do something like that...
Use the checklist below to help you with this activity. If you check the example with the checklist you can see that it follows the guidelines:
I used the past tense, I've written from my point of view (as Jimmy), I gave my own opinion, I included facts, I tried to use descriptive words, I used an informal style, I've used time conjunctions (next, later), I've broken it up into paragraphs and I've used inverted commas to show speech.
